Finnish Osprey Foundation

BirdLife Kanta-Häme founded the Finnish Osprey Foundation in 1990. The basis for the operations of the Foundation was the extensive work related to the conservation project of Kanta-Häme’s regional bird in 1986–87.

The initial capital of the Foundation was formed from the profits from the self-published book about ospreys (Sääksi). The Foundation’s domicile is in Hämeenlinna and it operates everywhere in Finland.

The Foundation fulfills its purpose by supporting the birds of prey conservation, research and promotion. The Foundation’s operations are an important form of environmental education.
There are several examples of how successful the cooperation has been, such as:

  • participation in the annual monitoring of the osprey population since 1971
  • having the majority of the Finnish ospreys nesting in artificial nests made by bird enthusiasts
  • The successful work WWF and the white-tailed eagle committee, which nowadays operates under the Osprey Foundation, for the conservation of the white-tailed eagle
  • starting and maintaining the Osprey Centre’s operations in Pohtiolampi, Kangasala
